U20 leaves for COSAFA Cup

The Namibia under-20 team left for Botswana on Tuesday afternoon to partake in the annual metropolitan COSAFA Under-20 championship. The team which was runner-up last year, losing 4-1 to Zambia in the final, has nine new players who Coaches Bernard Kaanjuka and Ricardo Mannetti have introduced in the team. According to team manager Jakes Amaning, the team delegation will be headed by Roger Kambatuku, as they look to win the elusive regional youth tournament. The team also received a boast of a clothing sponsorship the competition sponsors Metropolitan, as they were presented with an attire worth N$ 30 000 on Tuesday by Metropolitan Namibia.

Namibia is Group D, together with Zimbabwe, Angola and Madagascar, in what is poised as the group of death as the tournaments which kick-off on 1 December with the final to be played on December 10 in Gaborone. last year enroute to the final Namibia beat South Africa 2-0, drew two-all with Lesotho and demolished  Madagascar 3-0 to eventually lose 4-1 in the final to Zambia. Meanwhile, the Comoros team has withdrawn from the Youth Championships in Botswana due to difficulties with travel that were beyond the control of the team.

The Federation Comorienne de Football (FFC) was forced to take the step after the cancellation of their scheduled flight by Precision Air from Moroni on Monday. The FFC have tried in vain to get the players into Botswana on other flights without success and so it has been decided that they will not participate in the 2011 Metropolitan COSAFA Under-20 Youth Championships, which run from December 1 to 10. Comoros had been drawn in Group A along with host nation Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique, with that pool now reverting to a three-team group. It means there will now be 14 participants in the Southern African showpiece event, 13 from the COSAFA region and East Africa guests Tanzania.

Zambia are the defending champions after they claimed the trophy in last year's event that was also staged in Botswana.

Here is the full 18-men squad of Namibia:

Collin Ndjai ( Tura magic), David Petersen (Rebels), Okeri Maekopo (African Stars),Peter Steven  (Civics), Robinson Iyambo (Tura magic), Edmund Kambanda (Benfica), Alfeus Handura (Tura magic), Dynamo Fredericks (Civics), Neville Tjiueza (fwatz wieb durum, Germany), Batista Gomes (Rebels), Salom Pam  (Colts), Mike Sinvula (SKW), Petrus Shitembi (Rundu),Sadney Urikhob ( Ramblers), Benson Shilongo ( Tigers), Randall Goagoseb (Ramblers), Hendrick Somaeb (Blue Waters) and  Innocent Tembo  (Colts).

Namibia drew 1-1 against Zimbabwe in their opening match of the U20 Cosafa Cup competition in Botswana on Friday. Playing in Group D at the Molepolole Stadium, about 50km outside the capital Gaborone, Namibia took a first half lead through Blue Waters midfielder Hendrik Somaeb. Zimbabwe however equalised after the break to take a share of the spoils. In another Group D match, Angola beat Madagascar 1-0 to go to the top of the group. Namibia crash out of Cosafa U20 Cup - Submitted by Helge Schutz, 06/12/2011

Namibia crashed out of the Cosafa U20 Youth Championships in Botswana on Tuesday evening in a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Angola.

With 30 minutes remaining Namibia seemed set for a semifinal spot when they led 3-1, but the match turned on its head when Angola were awarded a penalty and Namibian defender Okeri Maekopi was red carded for excessive protestations. Angola immediately capitalised, scoring three goals to win the match and book a place in the semifinals of the competition, where they will meet Malawi. Nicolu Adriano scored a hattrick for Angola while Paciencia Cristovao scored their winning goal in the 89th minute. Benson Shilongo scored a brace for Namibia but missed a sitter just before halftime, while Petrus Shitembi scored one goal. Angola took the lead on 11m when Adriano rounded Namibia’s keeper Collin Ndjai to fire into the net. Namibia however equalised on 27m through a brilliant freekick by Petrus Shitembi that curled into the top corner of the net. Ten minutes later Namibia took the lead for the first time when Benson Shilongo slotted home from close range, but on the stroke of halftime Shilongo missed a sitter with an open goalmouth gaping. Shilongo put Namibia 3-1 ahead with his second goal on 61m, but the match took a dramatic turn a minute later when the referee awarded a penalty to Angola and Namibian defender Okeri Maekopi was sent off for excessive protests. Angola immediately capitalised with Adriano scoring from the spot to make the score 3-2. Angola turned up the tempo and equalised on 74m when Adriano grabbed his hattrick. With a minute remaining Paciencia Cristovao sealed Angola’s victory when he sped past Ndjai to score from an acute angle.

Angola will now play Malawi while the defending champions Zambia will meet Botswana in the semifinals.

NFA expressed Dismay at CAS dismissal

The Namibia Football Association has expressed their dismay at the latest ruling in their case by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which dismissed the appeal of the NFA against CAF.

On Tuesday 10 January 2012, the CAS rendered its decision in the arbitration between the Namibia Football Association and the Confederation African de Football (CAF): the CAS has dismissed the appeal of the Namibia FA and has confirmed the decision of the CAF Appeal Board dated 24 November 2011 and stated that the final award with reasons will be issued by the CAS in a few weeks.
"We are disappointed and we don't know how they have reached at this decision to dismiss our case but we will accept the decision and move on and plan forward", NFA Secretary General, Barry Rukoro, who also attended the hearing on Friday in Lausanne, Switzerland said.
The CAS states that Hervé Zengue was born in Cameroon and took a residency in Burkina Faso in 1994; he got a Burkinabe nationality certificate on 14 September 2006. And on 25 March 2011, the player received a five-year passport from Burkina Faso.

Hervé played against Namibia on 26 March 2011 and on 4 June 2011 in the 2012 AFCON qualifiers , with  Burkina Faso wining both matches.

Before the second match Namibia-Burkina Faso, the Namibia FA put forward that the player Hervé Zengue was ineligible to participate in that match and filed a protest.

On 28 October 2011, the Bureau of the Africa Cup of Nations Committee rejected the protest of the Namibia FA regarding the ineligibility of the player Hervé Zengue on the grounds that the protest letter failed to comply with Article 37.1 of the Regulations of the CAN 2012.

The Namibia FA filed an appeal to the CAF Appeal Board which was heard on 15 November 2011 and on 24 November 2011; the CAF Appeal Board rendered its decision which concluded.

"To declare invalid the protest submitted by the Namibia Football Association concerning the non-respect of the requirements stipulated by Article 37 of the 2012 CAN Regulations."

The Namibia FA filed its appeal at the CAS on 6 December 2011 and the CAS conducted an expedited procedure and heard the parties at a hearing on 6 January 2012.

Brave Gladiators lose to Tanzania

The Brave Gladiators lost 5-2 at Tanzania on Sunday for a 7-2 aggregate defeat in the first round of the  2012 African Women Championships qualifiers. The Namibian soccer ladies  team had it all to do in the second leg in Dar es  Salaam after losing 2-0 in Windhoek a  fortnight ago. But in a game with an estimated attendance of about 15 000 people and under very hot conditions, the Gladiators gave a good account of themselves  as they scored  two goals through Emmerencia Fredericks and Juliana Skrywer.

However Namibia managed to equalize nine minutes later through Emmerencia Fredericks who connected home a corner ball from Lydia Eixas. Asha Rashid was on the mark this time when she scored second goal for Tanzania in the 47 minute through a sizeable shot. Namibia equalized again in the 72nd minute. Thanks to striker Juliana Skrywer who capitalized on Tanzania goalie who hesitates to clear a cross from left flank. Tanzania was in the limelight in last six minutes where they managed to slot the ball in the Namibia net three times. Scorers were Eto Mlenzi in the 84th minute, Asha Rashid in the 88th and Mwanahamisi Omari in the 90.

Karas out, Erongo escape thriller

The 12 edition of the Namibian Youth Cup got underway at the Keetmanshoop Sports stadium on Friday  and produced some early upsets.
The host region, Karas, hosting the competition for the second time, squared off against Oshikoto region in the first match of Day-One and they dominated most of the play in the first half but had no goal to show for their enterprising efforts. It was the Oshikoto region who got the sucker punch in the second half as national junior team player Edmund Kambanda got onto an end of a good interplay from his teammates and he put the ball into the back of the net . The host players started to panic as time wore on and were making some erratic decisions with the ball and in the end , Oshikoto held on for a massive upset as they knocked out the much-more fancied Karas in front of their vocal hordes of  supporters who packed the stands.  Karas captain Warren Pofander however walked away with the man of the match award. Final score, Oshikoto 1-0 Karas

Namibia lose 2-0 to Rwanda, 22 April 2012

Namibia’s national Under 20 soccer team face an uphill battle to reach the second round of the African Youth Championship qualifiers after they lost their first leg home match 2-0 against Rwanda on Saturday.

The two sides met at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek and it was the hosts who had the first initiative as striker Terdius Uiseb saw his shot skimming the cross bar after only seven minutes. Rwanda’s first chance came from a counteratack when Kipson Atuheire received a cross from the left but his cracking shot went wide of Edward Maova’s goal. The sides then evenly matched each other until the 34th minute when Mapenzi Muwanei rounded off a great move for Namibia to hit thr back of the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Ruhinda Farouk struck a clever free kick for Rwanda, but Namibian keeper Maova managed to tip it over for a corner. Maova the pulled off two massive saves in quick succession from the resultant corner off the inspiring Bonny Mronye.

On the stroke of halftime, Namibian winger Enrico Hoebeb had an appeal for a penalty turned down and was subsequently yellow-carded for a dive. In the second half, the Rwandans were quick out of the blocks and three minutes after the restart their captain Energy Bayisenge appeared unmarked at the far post as he slotted home from close range. Rwanda continued to apply pressure and Bonny Mronye was at it again as he came close with a fine shot that was well saved by Maova. Rwanda however got their second goal when Moava turned from hero to villain on 63m. He first pulled off a great aerial save but then his poor clearance deflected off a Namibian defender and Kipson Atuheire was quick to pounce and tap the ball into the net. Namibian substitutes Keimuine Itamunua and Lee-Roy Adams came close to pulling one back as first Keimuine missed the far post by inches with a powerful shot, while Adams had his 30m shot parried over for a corner.

Namibian coach Ricardo Mannetti said his side would have to correct their mistakes ahead of the second leg match in Kigali, Rwanda on May 5. “Our team is just 14 days old and it was the very first time that they played together. The lads were probably over-excited, while they also failed to stick to the game plan,” he said. Mannetti said he expected to at least get a goal back in the return leg and he will not be making any major changes to his squad. “We have a mountain to climb because we will have to score at least three goals down there. It won’t be easy but we will do our best. We lost today due to two individual errors and we have to reduce them and work more on keeping the ball.” “I won’t be making any major changes to the side, it will be unnecessary because now these guys are starting to click and they deserve to be given a chance to prove themselves once again,” he added.

Gomes scored but Namibia bow out

The national under-20 side lost 2-1 at Rwanda on Saturday and failed to reach the second round of the 18th African Youth Championships qualifiers.

The 2-1 defeat meant that Rwanda advance to the next stage 4-1 on aggregate after they beat Namibia 2-0 two weeks ago in Windhoek. The match that was played at the Amahoro stadium in Kigali was always going to be a heavy mountain for Ricardo Mannetti's team to climb, and Namibia had their keeper Edward Moava to thank as he kept out the host earlier on in the match. Striker Itamunua Keimuine had a great chance for Namibia but in the second half Tumaine Ntamuhanga scored the opening goal just a minute from recess, while Namibian captain Wangu Gomes beat off a defensive error from Francois Habyarimana to equalize for the visitors four minutes later. The Namibia continued to press for the vital second goal in the encounter, but it was not to be as Rwanda's Belgium-based, Antwerp defender Solomon Nirisarike scored the winner with four minutes to the end of the game.

A much more spirited and determined performance from the Namibians who had affectively between together for two international matches and in a five weeks old team. Rwanda now face a hard task against Mali with whom they will host first between July 27-29 before playing away in Bamako between August 10-12. Mali finished fourth behind Super Eaglets who won the title last year in South Africa with Cameroon finishing in second place.

The top eight teams in Africa will fight for glory in 2013 in Algeria from where the best four qualify for the World U-20 Championships scheduled for June 2013 in Turkey.

Warriors  in narrow Nigeria defeat

The Brave Warriors on Sunday went down 1-0 at Nigeria in their opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Group F.

The match that was played in Calabar, Nigeria, saw the Warriors show grit and determination and matched their peers until the 80th minute, when Ikechukwu Uche scored the winner for the host. The Warriors will be flying back home on Tuesday, 5 June as they continue with the World Cup qualifiers programme. They will take on Kenya's Harambee Stars on Saturday 9 June, with Nigeria to take on Malawi. Malawi were at Kenya on Sunday and they played to one-all draw and that leaves Nigeria top of the Group on three points, with Kenya second, Malawi third each on one point and Namibia fourth on the table of points.

The Namibian side frustrated the Nigerians with a disciplined approach to the game and executed their coach Bernard Kaanjuka's game plan well. Namibia's defence failed to clear a loose ball in a crowded box and Uche slammed the ball into the net from close range. It was tough luck on Namibia who had defended well throughout the match, none more so than goal keeper Virgil Vries, who brought off several fine saves. Namibia were without the experienced players in striker Henrico Botes (Injury) and midfielder  Lazarus Kaimbi(suspension),  and will be available for selection for the Kenya match at the Windhoek's Independence Stadium  on Saturday with kickoff time set for 18h00. Rudolf Bester too missed the match due to injury, but would be ready to face Kenya on Saturday.

The NFA is calling on fans and supporters of football to purchase their tickets in advance as there will be no tickets sold at the gates on match day. The tickets are selling at N$ 30 and can be bought at Compu-ticket at Shoprite and Checkers countrywide, as well as the NFA Soccer House. The NFA have also stated there will be no VIP entrance tickets for sale for the match, but only invited guests will have admission to that section of the Stadium. People are also urged to refrain from bringing along bottles and cans as they will not be allowed into the Stadium as per the security measures in place and thus all drinks must be emptied into foam cups at the point of sale.

Namibia's starting line-up against Nigeria, Sunday, 3 June, Calabar: Virgil Vries, Angula Da Costa, Mwedihanga Willem, Horaeb Larry, Haoseb Denzil, Ketjijere Roland, Isaacks Heinrich, Shitembi Petrus, Stephanus Willy, Kamuhanga Eslin and Shipahu Tangeni.

Speed and Skills can win it for us - Hindjou

Namibia play Kenya on Saturday at the Windhoek's Independence Stadium with kickoff set for 18h00. Tickets are going for N$ 30 at Compu-ticket(Shoprite and Checkers)  and at Soccer House. The match will be officiated by referees from Botswana, while the match commissioner is from Zimbabwe. The Kenya team is expected to touch down at the Hosea Kutako International Airport later this afternoon at 18h00.

Former Brave Warriors midfielder Johannes Congo Hindjou reckons Namibia will have a successful 2014 FIFA world Cup qualifiers campaign.
Hindjou revealed this after seeing off the morning training session for the Warriors  on Thursday ahead of their crucial Group F encounter against Kenya on Saturday at the Windhoek Independence Stadium.
Hindjou says victory against Kenya will go a long way in making the road to Brazil interesting.

" I have seen this team since last year and also today at training you can see the spirit is very high and they have confidence to do well on Saturday. it will be a must win game against Kenya and we will be there to cheer on the guys definitely", Hindjou says. Hindjou who made his debut for the national team in that goalless draw at Botswana in 1996 thinks players such as the exciting Petrus Shitembi, the silky Heinrich Isaacks, together with strongman Ronald Ketjijere, amongst others can go on to become another golden generation of Namibia football. " these guys have it all and they are young and the most important thing I have noticed in this team is the speed and if you combine that with the natural ball skill players we have, you can kill anybody anyway and come Saturday I'm looking forward to victory against Kenya. We can beat them with that speed and skill", Hindjou notes. Tangeni Shipahu is believed to lead the sprinters in the team with the likes of Sadney Urikhob, Lazarus Kaimbi, Rudolf Bester, Hendrick Somaeb and Larry Horaeb also full of speed.

Hindjou who is capped 69 times for the Warriors also reckons interim coach Bernard Kaanjuka is directing the team  to the promised land. " I know the coach, what his qualities are but over the years he has improved and the team is doing very well under him and Ricardo (Mannetti) too is sharing his knowledge with the boys. " I was impressed with the score line in Nigeria and if we can get such result there then this can just be the year. Lest hope all goes well", says Hindjou.

Hansa Rostock midfielder Manfred Starke and Tura Magic’s Neville Tjiueza and Teberius Lombaard have been called up to the Brave Warriors squad for the friendly international against Rwanda in Windhoek on October 13. 05 Oct. 12 - Brave Warriors call-up for Rwanda friendly

Namibia, Rwanda in entertaining draw - Submitted by editor NamibiaSport on Sat, 10/13/2012

Namibia and Rwanda played to an entertaining goalless draw in a soccer friendly at the Independence Stadium on Saturday evening.

Namibia dominated possession and although they created a lot of chances they could not find the net, while Rwanda’s keeper Jean Claude Ndoli brought off some great saves. New cap Manfred Starke came close early on, blasting a long range shot over the bar, while Sadney Urikhob was a constant menace with his pace in the box. He shot narrowly wide after breaking into the box on 19m, while Starke once again shot wide after a freekick from Horaeb. Starke came close on 39m when his freekick was punched away for a corner by Ndoli and two minutes later Ndoli once again came to the rescue with a great diving save from a Rudolf Bester shot. Rwanda’s best efforts in the first half came on 21m when Imran Nshimiyimana broke through the defence but Virgil Vries rushed off his line to clear the danger, and three minutes later when Jean Claude Iranzi shot narrowly wide from a long cross. Starke, who had a great debut, came close early in the second half when he broke free in the box but Ndoli pulled off another great save to tip the ball for a corner. Imran Nshimiyimana had a great chance to put Rwanda ahead on 56m but with an open goal gaping he headed wide from close range. But Namibia did most of the attacking and their pressure nearly paid off on 66m when a Urikhob shot was blocked and Bester’s rebound shot went narrowly wide. Pineas Jacob replaced Bester on 76m and made an immediate impression as he raced clear on a counterattack but his shot was blocked. At the other end a cracking shot by Jean Claude Iranzi skimmed the crossbar, but Namibia finished stronger and once again came close in the final minutes. Another great run by Jacob put Urikhob clear in the box but his shot was saved and then in injury time. Jacob headed over the bar from a corner.

Burkina Faso beat Namibia 2-0

In a curtain raiser match Burkina Faso beat Namibia 2-0 in a CAF Africa Under 17 Qualifying encounter. Burkina Faso were physically taller and stronger and dominated play from the start. Winger Ismail Karambiri hit the post with a cracking shot on 36m but a minute later they took the lead when Ibrahim Ouedraogo scored at the far post from a long freekick. Willem Pinehas scored from a corner for Namibia after 73m but the goal was disallowed for offside and Barry Oumarou sealed Burkina Faso’s victory with a second goal when he slammed home a rebound on 86m.
Burkina Faso now hold a comfortable 2-0 lead going into the second leg match in Ougadougou on October 27.

Warriors must win-Kaanjuka - Submitted by NFA mediaofficer on Mon, 2013-03-18

The Brave Warriors will have to win the encounter against Malawi on Saturday or jeopardise their 2014 World Cup CAF Group F campaign.

These are the sentiments of Coach Bernard Kaanjuka who stress that the Brave Warriors match on Saturday at 17h00, Independence Stadium against the Flames of Malawi is very crucial for the future of Namibia in the race for Brazil 2014.

“We have to win this one, no draws, or defeat will be accepted. We have to map out our own destiny. We don’t need favours from anyone in this Group and we don’t know and don’t want to know what happens between Nigeria and Kenya in the other group match. So we have to do our job and do it well. That is the deal at the moment” says Kaanjuka.

The team had their first training session this morning at DTS in Windhoek and will have their afternoon session at 17h00 at the same venue and for the next two days and on Thursday they will move over to the Independence Stadium at the same times as well.

“The session this morning was very light. You don’t want to push the players much, they just played over the weekend and it is very important to take it easy at times”, explains Kaanjuka.

The team will however be without the services of Blue Waters enterprising winger Hendrick Somaeb, who is ruled out with an injury sustained over Waters goalless draw with Tigers on Saturday in the MTC Premiership.

“Hendrick is out and we will have to make a decision whether to call up someone else or just do with what we have. Otherwise, Ephraim Tjihonge too is missing and I have no idea when he is coming and the Thailand pair of Tangeni Shipahu and Lazarus Kaimbi arrives today and Manfred (Starke) arrives tomorrow. So far it looks good for the technical team to have all players called up around” Kaanjuka says.

The match tickets are available on Computicket and NFA Soccer House for N$ 30 each and fans are urged to get them as soon as possible and come out in numbers to support the Brave Warriors.

Here is the current 23 players: Arnold Subeb( Black Africa FC), Virgil Vries (Maritzburg United, South Africa), Efriam Tjihonge (Milano United, South Africa), Willem Mwedihanga (Amazulu, South Africa), Larry Horaeb (Ramblers FC), Da Costa Angula (Black Africa FC), Denzil Haoseb (Black Africa FC), Tiberius Lombard (Tura Magic FC), Jamunovandu Ngatjizeko (African Stars FC), Ananias Gebhardt, (Tigers FC), Willy Stephanus( Black Africa FC), Petrus Shitembi (University of Pretoria, South Africa), Ronald Ketjijere (University of Pretoria, South Africa) Bryan Bantam (Black Africa FC), Sadney Urikhob (Civics FC), Emilio Martin (Ramblers FC) ,Manfred Starke (Hansa Rostock, Germany), Neville Tjiueza (Tura Magic FC), Lazarus Kaimbi (Otsotspa FC, Thailand), Tangeni Shipahu (Otsotspa FC, Thailand), Rudolf Bester (Orlando Pirates, South Africa), Henrico Botes (Platinum Stars FC, South Africa), Pineas Jacob (Tigers FC).
